Team Announcements NEWS FOR ALL SWIMMERS AND DIVERS!!!!!IMPORTANT 2010-2011 SWIM/DIVE NEWS FROM COACH LAURAChaparral Swim and Dive 2010 – 2011 High School Swimming Season
Basic Information:
Chaparral will start swim and dive practice on Monday August 9th, the first day of school. We swim at Cactus Aquatics & Fitness Center at Cactus Park, which is on the northeast corner of Cactus and Scottsdale Roads. Unless otherwise notified, all practices and home meets will be at this location.
Practice for both swim and dive will be Monday – Friday at 2:45; Saturday will be at 8:30 for swim and 9:00 for dive. As we will be swimming and diving during the middle of the day, everyone is strongly encouraged to wear sunscreen at practices and meets and drink plenty of fluids.
Anyone interested in swimming or diving needs to obtain a physical, complete the athletic activity packet and turn it into Kathy Murray, the Athletic Director’s administrative assistant. She will give you a green slip which must be turned in to the coaches on the first day of practice. Anyone not having this slip will NOT be allowed to enter the water. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.
The season lasts 13 weeks and will culminate with our state meet which will be held either November 4th – 6th or November 5th & 6th at Kino Jr. High in Mesa.
Attendance:
Everyone is expected to swim or dive six days per week during the high school season unless otherwise notified. Club athletes swimming or diving with their club teams are required to swim or dive with Chaparral two times a week. Meets will count as one practice for those weeks we have dual meets or an invitational. Anyone not meeting these requirements is at risk of not swimming in dual meets or an invitational meet.
Apparel:
This year all athletes will be required to have a team suit, team cap (for swim), a team t-shirt and a team polo. The team polo will be the same one from last season. NO club caps or suits will be allowed at practices or meets.
All swimmers should come to practice with a suit and for swim, two swim caps and two pairs of goggles. For meets, swimmers should have their team suit and for swim their team cap, spare cap and two pairs of goggles. Divers should have a suit for practice and wear their team suit for meets.
Changes to the State Meets:
The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) has made several changes to high school swimming, beginning with the 2010-2011 swim and dive season.
There will only be two state meets as opposed to five. There will be a division 1 for the larger schools and a division 2 for the smaller schools. The number of schools in each division will be determined based on the number of schools offering swim and dive as a sport. The schools will be split equally between the two divisions unless there are an uneven number of schools offering swim and dive. In that case, there will be one extra team in division 1. I expect Chaparral to be a division 1 school for swim and dive.
To qualify for states, one must meet the qualifying times. There are automatic times and provisional times, similar to qualifying for NCAAs. The division 1 automatic times were based on the eighth place entry times for 5A1 and 5A 2 from the 2009 state meet. The provisional times were based on the 32nd entry time for 5A1 and 5A2. The division 2 standards were determined the same using the times from 4A1 and 4A2.
The times standards can only be achieved in an invitational meet, of which we are allowed to go to four during the season. Dual meets do not count as an invitational meet. Anyone achieving an automatic time standard is guaranteed of swimming in state so long as they are one of the top four entrants per event for Chaparral. As only the top 24 qualifying entrants per event will swim at state, achieving a provisional time standard does not guarantee a chance to swim at state.
Tryouts:
This year we will hold tryouts on Saturday August 21st. Anyone wanting to tryout for swim and dive must attend practice that day. All swimmers will be required to swim six 100s on a specified interval. If they make the interval for all six, they will be on the team. Anyone wanting to swim stroke or IM must swim the same stroke or IM for all six 100s. The intervals are as follows:
Girls Boys
6x100 free 1:45 1:40
6x100 stroke or IM 1:55 1:50
Divers will be required to successfully complete the following five dives:
Everyone is strongly encouraged to swim/dive over the summer so they can make the qualifying standards to be on the team. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Informal Meeting for Incoming Freshman Parents ONLY and Current Swim and Dive Athletes and ParentsThe first meeting for the 2010 Chaparral Swim and Dive Season will be held on Tuesday, May 11th at 7:00pm in the Chaparral High School Library. 5A-II CHAMPIONSHIP MEET RESULTS LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STATE MEET INFO FROM COACH LAURA!!Swimmers,
Everyone swimming in states is required to take the bus both to Kino both Friday and Saturday. I will not accept a note from a parent allowing athletes to drive or be driven. Anyone not riding the bus could be scratched from the meet. As always, parents may sign out the athletes and drive them home. Anyone not signed out must be on the bus for the ride back to the school. Saturday after the meet the bus will stop for dinner on the way home, place to be determined. Please bring money so you can eat.
The bus will leave the school Friday and Saturday mornings at 9:30. Please plan to arrive before then so we can leave on time. Everyone swimming in the meet has been excused from school tomorrow for the whole day. Parents should not call the attendance line and report you as being absent as I have already taken care of it with the school.
On Friday, please wear your Chaparral t-shirt. On Saturday, we will wear our red polos. The mornings could be cool so please dress warmly. Reminder: Jewelry is not allowed. Boys can only wear suits from below their navel to above their knees; girls' suits can not cover their shoulders and must be above the knees. Zippers and other fastening devices are not allowed; only racer back suits are permitted. All suits must be permeable, meaning LZRs are not allowed. The fast skin is an acceptable suit; Arena is not because the logo is too big. Only one suit may be worn so boys please take off your drag suit prior to getting on the blocks.
Swimmers cannot wear club caps or club suits; anyone wearing one could be disqualified. CHS team caps are allowed but swimmers may not wear another swimmer's cap if it has the other swimmer's name on it.
For both prelims and finals, swimmers will report to the ready room area, which will be located behind the bleachers where the bulk head will be.
Relays for finals will be determined based on how everyone performs tomorrow. I will have those available Saturday on the bus. I am making a few changes in the relays for tomorrow and will have that tomorrow morning.
